Apparently Current TV (the network funded by Al Gore) put out a video depicting a caricature of Rush Limbaugh as Jabba the Hut and Meghan McCain as the ooooooooooonly “Republican” being able to bridge the gap between Dems and Reps – because you know, Dems are always trying to find a common ground (ROLLING EYES!). HotAir notes that Ms. McCain declared on her Twitter update the video as the funniest thing ever. Ed Morrissey makes an excellent point:

Er, wasn’t this the same young lady who got so offended over cracks about her weight? Quite the hypocrite.

So, the other week Ms. McCain went on a media blitz to declare herself an open-minded conservative while blasting iconic, conservative pundits like Rush Limbaugh and Laura Ingraham.

Contradiction of the Day – I’m declaring myself ”open-minded” but I’ll sure as heck throw stones and judge those who aren’t agreeing with me 100% of the time, oh unless they’re Democrats.

In Ms. McCain’s defense (uh, I hate that phrase, but I’ll use it here) I think she is just on her journey to becoming a full-fledged conservative. It doesn’t help that her dad is borderline RINO and that  her age probably plays a part in her ability to adapt to traditional convervative ideals.  In 10 years, I think her outlook on things could be completely different and possibly even more conservative than they are today. That said, I think she should back off taking on the conservative party icons prior to building her own base and credentials for being a public spokesperson of the Republican movement.

I mean, I get it - she’s young, her dad is John McCain and the GOP seems to be desperate for that under 30 vote. But instead of turning to people like Ms. McCain, why not devote more of that attention to younger activists like Jason Mattera. He’s bright, articulate, hilarious, creative and in that prime under-30 target. His undercover reporting at the DNC was some of the best stuff I’ve seen in years (”Me and Little John Edwards – we’re about to go cheat on someone.” LOL). Not to mention I totally heart his New Yaaaawrk/Brooklyn accent. Loves it!

I’m 30 years old and I know there are more voices out there to help the GOP get their message out to younger voters. It’s just harder to convince them because there’s a completely different set of rules when you are marketing to a person in their 20s vs. someone in their late 30s, 40s, etc. I think we all realize that. But I don’t like how the default goes to Ms. McCain simply because she’s John McCain’s daughter and had a blog during the 2008 election. Yes, she has some views and a blog, but so do a lot of younger conservatives who can openly articulate their positions without the need to get into a battle of insults with traditional, popular conservative pundits.

catfightThere’s no need for conservatives to fight amongst themselves when we already have the task of going up against the crazies, uh, liberals, especially those at Crazy Central aka the Daily Kos.  But the media will cling onto Ms. McCain because of who her dad is and the apparent fact that she is still holding onto her Democratic ideals (for now) while masking them as “new-age Republican.” And they’d rather promote a good catfight among Republicans instead of having a civil discussion about true conservative ideals. This is a country that loves Jerry Springer for goodness sakes.

Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!

It was either Ann Coulter or Bill O’Reilly that stated how the media loves a RINO until they are going against their precious Democrats. Hopefully Ms. McCain won’t have to learn that the hard way because I don’t know if there will be any Republican pundits left to be on her side if she keeps going the way she does. I mean what will her reaction be four years from now if it’s her instead of Rush that’s depicted as Jabba the Hut on CurrentTV?
